First Alpha Course Completed
On December 8th, 2016 over 40 people gathered in St Anne’s Social Hall to celebrate the end of our first Alpha Course. Participants, team members and invited friends shared a lasagna dinner together, enjoyed jazz music performed by Therese Chen, and watched a 30 minute video from the Alpha program on the topic “Is There More to Life Than This?”
Comments from the participants
“I felt like I was just an anonymous church-goer who was lukewarm in faith. Now I am much more comfortable around everyone else. I am comfortable in my identity as a Catholic. More community is great for everyone!”
“A great new experience for me. Thanks!”
“Alpha has encouraged me to explore my faith more.”
“Before, my spiritual life was separate from my earthly life. Now there is more merging of the two.”
“I was afraid to communicate/validate my love for Jesus and God. Now I am not afraid and with His strength I’m ready to take small or big steps.”
“Now I have a more open minded perspective of Catholic faith and faith of all Christians.”
“With Alpha I have appreciated the Church community even more, and found good, new friends. The healing from those people during Alpha was extraordinary to me personally.”
“I learned more from others. Their opinions made me appreciate my faith and God.”
Alpha is a course in basic Christianity which runs for 10 weeks and one weekend. Each week participants share a simple meal together, watch a 30 minute video on a selected topic, and then break into small groups to discuss the presentation. Over the course of the program, people in the small groups get to know one another and become friends and have a chance to ask questions about their faith. Alpha was developed by Fr. Nicky Gumbel, an Anglican pastor at Holy Trinity Brompton Church in London, England. Over 29 million people have participated in Alpha since its inception. In 2015, over 2 million people world-wide participated in Alpha, with 1/3 being Catholics.
